Heartbreak to Hope: Timofey in Ukraine

Timofey’s heritage was one of faith and service. His grandfather is a pastor, and his own father, Brother Gregory, served as a pastor until 2022 when he answered the call to defend his country, Ukraine. For three years, Gregory’s family, his church, and even young Timofey prayed for his safety.

A new (agonizing) story begins

But in May 2025, the unthinkable happened. After sustaining a severe head wound and undergoing five surgeries, Brother Gregory passed away from his injuries and went home to be with Jesus.

For Timofey, a new, agonizing story began. He was absolutely shattered. He took his father’s death very hard, and he was angry at God. Unable to be with his father for a final goodbye, Timofey struggled to believe he would never see him again. When we met Timofey at summer Bible camp in July, he was closed off. He refused to pray; he wouldn’t participate and he withdrew from the other children and leaders; and his grief manifested in tears and sudden, explosive outbursts. His heart was broken.

The fire of God’s Truth

In Ukraine and in many countries around the world, Walk Thru the Bible has a vibrant children’s ministry. Our team on the ground, including our WTB regional director Boris Volkov and our children’s ministry coordinator Cathryn Martych, lead Bible camps all summer long for children, using Walk Thru the Bible otLIVE and ntLIVE events (these events teach the big picture storyline of Scripture) and our follow-up children’s resources.

When Timofey came to Bible camp this summer (just two months after his dad passed away), our WTB team members were teaching on the life of the prophet Elijah from our Biblical Character Series Story Sets for Kids. During the lessons on Elijah, God began to heal Timofey’s heart. Timofey learned that God took Elijah home with Him in a chariot of fire. From that lesson, Timofey learned that God is still in the fire of our lives and our circumstances. Timofey realized that Christ-followers go to heaven to be with Him, just as He promises us. And most importantly, Timofey learned that when God takes believers Home, that is not the end. It is the beginning of eternal life—the promise that as believers, we will see Jesus and spend eternity with Him.

This divine truth touched Timofey’s young heart. He realized that his father, though he missed him terribly, was happy in his new home with Jesus. And he realized that His heavenly Father loves him with an everlasting love.

By September, Timofey had returned to church and started attending Sunday school again, with his faith—and his hope—renewed. God’s love and the hope and truth of the Bible healed Timofey’s heart.
