Grandparent’s Camp

When my friend told me about her experience at Lutheridge grandparent camp with her two grandsons, a little spark ignited within me. The idea of grandparent camp felt both exciting and a little intimidating. I mentioned it to my daughter, and within minutes, the plan was set. Papa and I would go, and Anna, our eight-year-old granddaughter, would join us.
I tried to imagine what was going through Anna’s mind. This would be her very first overnight camp, more than three hours from home in the mountains, surrounded by people she didn’t know. The “what ifs” must have filled her thoughts. I must admit, I was right there with her. The “what ifs” were causing me relentless forms of self-doubt.
Then, the day we arrived at camp, everything changed. A sense of peace washed over me. I had turned my misgivings over to Jesus, remembering that He is stronger than any storm. My worries faded, replaced by two simple jobs: take care of Anna and simply be present in the beautiful creation surrounding us. Every person we met seemed to have a kind heart, full of empathy and peace. It was a place where we could connect with each other, with nature, and with a shared sense of faith.
Though we returned home tired and a bit damp from the mountain rains, we were also filled with inspiration and a deep sense of gratitude. This experience was more than just a camp; it was a testament to courage, faith, and the enduring bond between a grandparent and a grandchild …a journey we will cherish forever.
