The Spain translation project has been active since 2003 with a long-term goal of all Scripture being available to the Deaf in Spain. The formats facilitate maximum use and interaction with Scripture, leading them to a relationship with Jesus. Currently, SIL is nearing the end of a major benchmark….the completion of the New Testament, scheduled to be dedicated in December 2026. This will be the first Deaf New Testament in Europe and likely only the second in the world. Over the years, the project has served as an example and a testing ground for new ideas and methodologies, including sociolinguistic survey, writing systems, 3D animation, Web and phone app technology, and ecumenical cooperation. Members of the translation team continue to be involved in efforts across Europe and the world, promoting Scripture use in the Deaf Evangelical church with natural signed languages, creating and using appropriate and innovative technologies, and encouraging the use of Scripture in public and private settings, with both Protestant and Catholic communities.
SIL is a faithful partner of The Bolick Foundation.
