Jamie* arrived at ECCCM three months after her last cancer treatment. “Cancer made it hard for me to work,” she said. “I am trying to get back on my feet. I am even working two jobs, but I just can’t seem to get ahead.” Not only was Jamie battling cancer which made it difficult for her to work over the last several months, but she was also caring for her two grandchildren. As her case manager listened to her story, she recognized Jamie as a fighter – a survivor. Jamie came only to ask to be enrolled in our Crisis Assistance Coaching Program (CACP,)” her case manager shared. “She came to ECCCM seeking education. Her goal was to get help defining her goals. She wanted to learn how to budget on her small income and become financially stable.” We enrolled her in the class. We also helped take some of the pressure off her financially by paying to keep her power and water on. We got her caught up on her rent and signed her up for our food assistance program. As Jamie left our office, she was in tears. “I feel so much more in control of my future,” she said. “Just having a listening ear makes such an enormous difference in how I feel.” Jamie was faithful to her classes, and she continues to heal and provide support to her grandchildren. We are humbled by the life circumstances that bring clients to our door. We are delighted with the progress they make after receiving compassionate care from a case manager who listens to them and determines the best ways to support them through their crisis.
