What Skills has God Given You?

Have you ever wondered what Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) spouses do while their partners are flying or working on planes?

I’ve wondered this myself—and fortunately, as a writer, I have the privilege of meeting with missionaries whenever they pass through headquarters. During these conversations, I’ve been asking spouses how they spend their time in the field.

I recently spoke with Jaalah Kanagy, who serves in Ecuador with her husband, Luke.

“In Ecuador, you have to be really intentional to make friendships, but God has been really gracious toward us,” she explained. “We’ve been able to make community wherever we go. We’ve been able to find friends and a church. It’s been really good.”

Jaalah keeps herself busy throughout the week. On Tuesdays, she participates in a local Bible study, and on Thursdays, she facilitates a virtual Christian leadership training class. Other nights, she hosts women in her home for board games and to study the Bible—always with something homemade on the table to eat.

In fact, in the short time Jaalah has been in Ecuador, she has become known in the community for her baking, with people occasionally asking her to bake for special occasions like Quinceañeras. Instead, she invites them to her kitchen to learn.“Ecuadorians don’t really bake, so I’ll tell [them] if you want to come over, I’ll help and teach you—and then next time you can do it by yourself. So they’ll come over, and we’ll do it together. It’s fun!”

Ultimately, I’m reminded through these conversations that God has given each of us unique skills that we can use to further His kingdom.

What skills has God given you to show others what a life with Jesus can look like?
