Being Light and Hope for Mothers and their Babies

During the advent season, the birth of Christ is on our hearts and minds. Like Mary giving birth to Jesus in a stable, women around the world find there is “no room at the inn” during their tender days of pregnancy, delivery and early motherhood. With generous support from The Bolick Foundation, Lutheran World Relief is saving the lives of vulnerable mothers and their children in places like Niger, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan.

Young widow Nyaluit Chuol and her young children are among the four million people who have been displaced from their homes in South Sudan – which continues to endure one of the world’s worst and longest-lasting humanitarian crisis.  Due to violence, grinding poverty and four years of extreme flooding, about two-thirds of people live in poverty. After months of flooding in the area where Nyaluit and her five children lived, there was no food or clean water left.  Leaving would be brutally dangerous, but staying meant certain death. She and her children set off on a journey, bringing only what they could carry. After six long days, traveling more than 70 miles through a region patrolled by a violent tribe, they safely reached a displacement camp in Mareng where Lutheran World Relief runs a medical clinic.  You can learn more about Nyaluit’s journey and how, thanks to donors like The Bolick Foundation.
